The Ubuntu wiki is a place to share and maintain content of general interest to Ubuntu users.

Relationship to Ubuntu docs

The wiki complements Ubuntu's official documentation, which is developed more cautiously under the stewardship of dedicated engineering teams who have a professional responsibility to maintain the documentation as part of a product.

In comparison, it is much easier to make an edit or create a page on the wiki. This means it can be used to generate and connect ideas quickly on a wide range of topics relevant to the Ubuntu community.

Status of the wiki?

It is currently in a public beta state.

Anyone is welcome to try it out and edit pages.

We are preparing for a full public release to accompany the deprecation of the old Ubuntu wikis. This is scheduled for August 2026.

How is the wiki built?

It's built using MediaWiki, the same wiki engine used by Wikipedia and also other Linux wikis, including Arch and Fedora.

Why can't I find x page?

Currently, our approach is to not do a bulk migration of old wiki pages to the new wiki.

There are tens of thousands of pages in the old wiki. Many haven't been edited in 20 years. Most receive almost no traffic.

A significant number are empty or contain spam. If we migrated them all, the community when then have an enormous maintenance burden that could span many years. In the meantime, these pages may still be discoverable by humans or AI, and increase the amount of outdated information that is found.

Are the old pages gone?

No. All of the information from both of the old wikis is archived publicly on GitHub.

If you think something is missing, searching the archive is quick and easy.

You are free to migrate and update anything that you think is important.
