Ubuntu Wiki:User groups and teams
User groups are groups that a user may be a member of. They may signify some sort of status or grant additional permissions and tools. Unlike most wikis, the Ubuntu Wiki bundles many of these user groups into teams with overall roles.
Some groups are assigned by default to all users, while others are automatically assigned following criteria such as after making a number of edits. Group membership that is not directly automated by the wiki itself is derived from Launchpad team membership.
A user's group membership can be checked at Special:UserRights. The full list of user groups and their respective rights can be found at Special:ListGroupRights.
User groups
User groups added automatically
User
User is the default group added to all registered users. It allows for the editing of unprotected pages, as well as the creation of discussion pages.
Autoconfirmed
The autoconfirmed group grants additional permissions to users that have demonstrated a certain level of trust, either through contributions to the wiki or the Ubuntu community overall.
For most users, making at least 10 edits and having an account age of at least 4 days starting from their first edit will grant the autoconfirmed group. Ubuntu membership also grants this group.
Autoconfirmed users gain the following privileges:
- Create articles, move pages, and upload files
- Edit semi-protected pages
- Circumvent most CAPTCHA requirements
- Circumvent IP-based rate limits
- Circumvent some abuse filters
User groups related to teams
Patrollers
The patrollers user group permits members to mark pages as "Patrolled" using MediaWiki's patrolled edit system.
Membership is primarily derived through the patrollers team.
Administrators
The administrators user group, also known as "sysops", is a highly privileged group, granting a wide range of abilities.
This includes but is not limited to:
- Applying page protections
- Editing semi-protected and fully protected pages
- Deleting pages and tags
- Creating and modifying abuse filters
- Blocking users
- Perform other actions as listed at Special:ListGroupRights#sysop
Membership is primarily derived through the administrators team.
Bureaucrats
The bureaucrats user group allows members to directly edit the user rights of others and rename users.
Membership is derived through the super administrators team.
Interface administrators
Interface administrators gain the ability to modify pages containing content that is executed as code, changing how the wiki is styled and behaves site-wide.
Membership is derived through the super administrators team.
Super administrators
The super administrators user group, also known as "sysadmin" or "system administrators", is the most privileged group. They have all the rights that administrators have, along with the technical ability to do a number of wide-reaching and rarely required actions:
- Edit the interface
- Create users
- Change user rights
- Import pages from other wikis
Membership is derived through the super administrators team.
Vanity groups
Vanity groups are user groups that don't grant any special privileges by themselves but may represent some other kind of status.
Canonical
The Canonical user group is granted to those employed by Canonical.
Ubuntu member
The Ubuntu member role is granted to those who have Ubuntu membership.
Teams
Teams are bundles of user groups, representing a general role on the Ubuntu Wiki. Typically, some kind of special criteria needs to be achieved and maintained for membership within a team.
Teams are managed on Launchpad, not the Ubuntu Wiki directly. SSO is used to derive the appropriate wiki user group membership based on Launchpad team membership.
Patrollers team
The patrollers team comprises Ubuntu community members that have demonstrated some level of contribution or trust. They gain the patrollers user group as well as the autoconfirmed user group.
Membership is managed via the Ubuntu Wiki patrollers team on Launchpad. Ubuntu technical authors as well as Ubuntu members are members of this team.
Administrators team
The administrators team, also known as the admin team, is a small team trusted with all the powers required for the day-to-day maintenance and governance operations of the Ubuntu Wiki.
Members of the administrators team are granted the following user groups:
The team is managed using the Ubuntu Wiki admins team on Launchpad. Membership is drawn from members of existing Ubuntu community governance bodies such as the communications council and the community council.
Super administrators team
The super administrators team is a select, highly trusted group of individuals. They have the rights required not only for the day-to-day maintenance and governance operations of the Ubuntu Wiki but also for site development and other wide-reaching actions.
Members of the super administrators team are granted the following user groups:
The team is managed using the Ubuntu wiki super admins team on Launchpad. Members are individually selected and approved by Ubuntu community governance bodies such as the communications council.
